farm selector map
short description

I-FARM map toolbar
We developed a new map server tool for I-FARM. The application can assist I-FARM users to find the right field input information for each of their specific fields. This is the first free interactive map application running over the internet at Iowa State University.

Limitations

  • The preferred browser for this ASP.NET application is Microsoft Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher.
  • The application currently supports farms in the state of Iowa only
  • The application takes 30-60 seconds to initially display the first map on your screen, following processes take less time.

Check out and explore
Go to I-FARM and find the map feature in the '→farm→location' page.
After you selected the state of Iowa an 'open farm selector map (Iowa)'- button will show up. Click on that button, do your farm field identifications using the map, and return to the I-FARM window, leaving the map window open, and click the button called "pass map results to I-FARM input".

Features like: nearest weather station, field area, average hill slope, and hill slope direction are working with I-FARM right now. We are still working on the transfer of dominant soil type information from the map application results to the I-FARM input.

Find your farm with the zoom-in tool
Activate the zoom-in tool (1) in the toolbar. When you click on that tool a rectangle is drawn around the icon.
Use the mouse to zoom-in. Click at the upper left corner of your county with the left button of your mouse and hold that button down and drag the mouse to the lower right corner of the county and release the mouse-button. The tool will say: "Loading". You can zoom-in using 2 or 3 steps to find your farm.
In each scale of the zoom-in process appropriate layers will show up, like roads, rivers, streams. When the scale of townships has been reached aerial photos will show up in the background. Photos of the fall of the year 2000 after harvest have been incorporated.

Identify individual fields
Activate the polygon-tool (5) in the toolbar. Draw each field by clicking 4 or more corners of a field on the map. Double-click or Control-click for the last corner of the field. The application will generate a new map with an arrow in the center of the field indicating the slope direction down hill. A result table is created at the bottom of the page. Each user can identify 8 fields. With the show all fields-button you can show a map with all your fields. Each map can be displayed in a new window, for saving and printing purposes on your own computer, through tool 9. Notice: allow pop-ups in your Windows XP to get that page.

Your feedback
Please give us feedback on this mapping tool at evo@iastate.edu or call 515-292-7055.
We would like to work on your suggestions, remarks and questions, before we make further announcements for a larger public.
